07 Jun The 5 Social Media Questions I Get Asked The Most
I’ve been working in social media marketing for over 7 years now. Over my career consulting and working with brands big and small, there are some social media questions that always come up. In this post I’ll share 5 of the questions I get asked the most about social media marketing.
How Do I Get More Followers?
This is probably the social media question I get asked the most. The truth is – it’s not all about the follower numbers. Do followers matter? – yes, but does a large following mean you’ll see a return? – not necessarily. With that said gaining followers is not just about one activity, but all your activities working together to reach more of the right followers for your brand or business. The quality of your content, if you are really in tune with your audience, will aid in growing your following. On the more technical side – figuring out how often to post can help you gain followers as your network may react differently when you post more or less. Another great way to build up your following is to work with influencers. Influencer campaigns can expose your brand to fresh eyes. Learn a little more about working with influencers here. One final way to gain followers is to use social advertising (we’ll discuss this a little more later on in this post).
What Do I Post?
Another social media question I get asked often is what to post. Figuring out what to post can be confusing. Just thinking about having to be informative, entertaining, drive website traffic, and sell can make your head spin. What you post on your social media networks will depend on a few factors including:
- Your social media objectives and goals
- Your business and industry
- What your audience responds to
- Your brand voice, look and feel
- Content creation ability
Share images and videos that are high quality, and reflect your brand the right way. Your content should add value to your customers, shows off your product or service, and support any brand activities. Creating a content calendar will help you stay on track and develop content that works to support your goals and engages your audience. Check out a few ideas on what to post on social media here.
What Networks Should I Be On?
One of the most frequent questions I get asked as a social media consultant is what networks should my brand or business be on? The answer is – that depends on your industry or niche. Even within each industry, this can vary from brand to brand. So how do you figure it all out?
You can start with the “Big 3” – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to cover your bases. More importantly I’d say start with figuring out which networks your audience is most active on. You should also consider which networks you know how to use and can dedicate time to – It’s better to do a few networks well instead of 5 haphazardly.
How Do I Know It’s Working?
This question has many answers. If you’re asking how to figure out if your social media growth tactics are working – that’s one thing. When it comes to directly tracking sales, there’s a little bit of a different story. Let’s start with knowing when your social growth tactics are working:
- You’ll see followers increase
- You’ll notice engagement with your posts
- Your posts will reach more people
Now, tracking direct sales in social media marketing has always been an issue. Social media marketing results can be hard to track because of the nature of social media and how we use and process it. You may see something that attracts your eye, but not act on purchasing it until you need it, and remember you saw something about it online. With that said there are some ways to to gauge whether your social media networks are driving sales and web traffic. You can create tracking codes to add to your social media post links, promote a social media only discount code, and pay attention to your web analytics for increases in web traffic from social media networks. More advanced users can use tracking pixels to keep a closer eye on your followers.
Should I Pay For Ads?
Not all of us have budgets to work with, but a social media question that comes up often is whether or not you need to spend money on social advertising. I am a big fan of growing audiences organically, and you don’t need to spend money on social media ads. If you do have a budget, use it on posts that do well organically. The important thing to remember about social media ads is that targeting is everything. This will ensure that your accounts and posts are reaching the right people and that your spend isn’t a waste.
Social media marketing has SO many moving parts. If you have a question I didn’t answer in this post or have further questions about the ones I did please let me know if a comment below!
