5 Ways to Use the Instagram Nametag Tool to Gain More Followers for Your Brand or Business

This article was originally published in Social Media Today

When I first heard of Instagram’s new Nametag tool I thought it seemed a little bit pointless – I mean, I can just open my app and type in a username right? But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that there actually might be situations where the option could be quite useful.

In this post, I’m going to go over Nametag codes, how they work, and how you can use them to promote your business.

What is an Instagram Nametag?

An Instagram Nametag is basically like a QR code – it’s an image which other users can scan (from within the Instagram app) and instantly follow that person or profile.

To set up your own Nametag, navigate to your profile, then hit the menu icon in the upper right hand side. Tap on “Nametag” and you’ll be able to see how your current Nametag looks. You can customize it by tapping through a few different design options, including and emoji backhround, a selfie and a multi-colored screen.

To scan someone else’s Nametag, navigate to your profile again, tap the menu icon on the upper right hand and tap “Nametag”. Your Instagram Nametag will pop up, but you’ll also be able to choose the “scan a nametag” option at the bottom to scan someone else’s in.

Using Your Instagram Nametag to Gain More Followers

Now that you have the basics down, let’s get to the different ways you can put the Instagram Nametag tool to gain more followers.

1. Networking

Networking events, parties or situations are great opportunities to use your Instagram Nametag. These places can be loud, and conversations are usually short. Instead of struggling to hear a username to follow your new friend, you can scan each other’s Nametags.

2. At Conferences/Corporate Events

Conferences and corporate events are perfect for making connections in your industry, with peers, as well as with potential customers. Make it easy for them to take the interaction past your booth by creating signage with your Nametag that they can scan.

Remember you can use flyers, conference agendas and any takeaway materials to promote your social media channels.

3. In Print

Speaking of signage – why not put your Instagram Nametag on print materials?

If you’re creating flyers, or you have access to a magazine (or are creating an ad in one), you can use your Instagram Nametag as part of the visual to gain followers.

4. In Emails

Think about the number of emails you send each day. Email signatures are great places to highlight any upcoming initiatives – so why not try your Instagram Nametag? You can also send a dedicated social media email with your Nametag to your list to get them to follow you online.

5. Physical Locations

Signage in physical locations is a simple reminder for your visitors to continue their experience and follow you online. Try creating signage with your Instagram Nametag to gain more followers.

One bonus tip is to incentivize people to follow you. You can highlight Instagram exclusive content, a special discount, or run a contest in order to get people over to your Instagram account.

There’s a range of ways you can use the tool to help boost your following. Rather than just noting that ‘we’re on Facebook’ or including the Instagram logo somewhere in your store, try using the Nametag instead – a quick and easy way to connect to your Instagram presence.
