Sometimes after you finally find the perfect image, spend time to edit it just right, then… well nothing, because you’ve drawn a blank about your caption! It can be really easy to get stuck when its time to write your messaging. Stare blankly at your phone no more! In this post I’ll show you 6 ideas for creating your next caption.

An image is worth 1,000 words, and is what will initially attract the attention of your audience, but your caption inspires action. Wether your goal is click throughs, awareness, to make people think, post engagement, or simply likes – your captions and messaging are what will tell your readers what you want them to do. With so many elements floating in your mind it can be easy to get stuck.
Explain the photo
This may feel a little redundant, but use your caption to describe your photo or go into further detail about the subject in the image or video. This type of post is great to showcase a product and it’s features, show off your office or new employee.
Tell a story
Try a longer form post caption and tell a story to go along with your content piece. This is a chance to go more in depth and show your audience some personality (building deeper connections). Give your audience background on the awards ceremony at your company, tell them why you love the particular coffee drink you snapped a photo of from your favorite coffee spot – give them some insight into the thoughts and story behind the photo. This will only work on networks that allow longer posts.
Ask A Question
Not only will asking a question solve your caption issue, it also doubles as an audience engagement opportunity. Ask you audience an open ended question, ask their opinion or if they’ve had a shared experience. Don’t get discouraged if people don’t answer your right away, keep integrating questions into your posts.
Emoji it up!
When I’m at a loss for words I use the language of Emoji. With so many symbols there is bound to be one emoji (or a combination of emojis) that can help you convey your message or the feeling you want to get across.
Keep it Simple
When it doubt, keep it simple. Choose one word, a hashtag, a quote, line from a movie or song your fan base will recognize and relate to. Let your “vibe” or personality shine, be creative, humorous – just make sure it is true to your brand. Sometimes not overthinking is the best strategy, and this approach lets you have a little fun and again connect with your audience a bit more.
It’s okay to make it all about the picture. If your photo is exceptionally captivating (or even if its just a great photo) try saying nothing and see how your audience reacts to it.
My last piece of advice is that knowing your audience will be the best tool for constructing a caption. The more you know about them the more you know about how they communicate, if they use emojis, what quotes may resonate with them etc.
